The ancestors in Sistren
are real people. They come from my own family tree. I found them over
the course of years doing genealogy research at familysearch.org and other
places. As details accumulate from the past, to me there comes a point
when a life is evoked.

Like many others, I find the Descent of Inanna inspiring because
it is about a female hero. Inanna's heroic journey changes the world,
bringing about a new balance between the mundane and the sacred. Her
willingness to response to the call of the "great below" benefits her
whole people, as well as her personal inner life.

The story in Sistren evolved over quite a long
period. Some parts -- Erika's journal, for instance -- are more than
ten years old. It just seemed to require time for this book to finish.

I thought I had made up the word
"sistren" (a plural of
the word “sister” with mythic or ritual connotations, as – “brethren”).
But I've found out since that it's been used by many others, generally
in the same sense.

The house in Sistren is based on an actual
house. Some years ago, while I was living in New York City, we rented a
weekend place in northwestern Connecticut. I used this house as the one
where Erika has lived, and Nina arrives. It had the same screened porch
and room layout, and it perched on the side of a hill with a wonderful
view to the west.
The driveway was a bumpy challenge. No Old Growth forest, though. Just
smaller trees crowding in on the yard.
